Alli and Angie Simpson are enjoying a heartwarming mother-daughter date at Derby Day ahead of the Melbourne Cup but Alli swears her mum doesn’t play favourites in their family.

“I might be the favourite child today, but then she’ll have Cody and Thomas as a screensaver,” she tells 9honey Celebrity from the Penfolds marquee.

“So whoever’s with her, she shares the love; she’s very diplomatic.”

With two famous children – musician and actress Alli and swimmer and singer Cody – Angie certainly has her work cut out for her at flash events like Derby Day.

She promises 9honey that while she’s starting the day with Alli, they’ll be connecting with Cody and his girlfriend Emma McKeon before the day is over.

Alli looks divine in a form-fitting black mini dress and YSL heels with a huge white Morgan and Taylor bow in her hair, which she says she curated the whole look around.

She also reveals she did her own makeup for Derby Day, as she and Angie got ready together without a glam squad.

”We just like hanging in the room and listening to ’80s music and having a champagne,” Alli says.

Like so many young women in the spotlight, Alli is protective of her private life but has found a balance where she can connect openly and authentically with fans on social media, even in difficult times.

On New Year’s Eve in 2022, Alli broke her neck diving into a shallow pool.

“I’ve been through some pretty heavy things, like mental health-wise. I broke my neck a year and a half ago and I’ve had one of the lowest years of my life,” she confesses.

“I didn’t go out. I just couldn’t leave the house for a year [so] it’s nice when people can relate and realise we all have problems [and] no one’s perfect.”

Sharing parts of her recovery and mental health experiences on social media also showed her that at the end of the day, people love you most when you’re authentic.

“You know, we don’t have to live up to anybody else’s standards and people like you more if you’re just gonna let your hair down and be silly and have a good time.”
