Nina Nesbitt is a singer-songwriter in her own right, but at one point in time she was only known by one label: Ed Sheeran‘s ex-girlfriend.

Nesbitt dated the A-Team singer in around 2011 after they met before he was to appear on radio. She played him a song on his guitar and as a result he took her along on his European tour, with the rookie singer opening for his shows.

Sheeran’s songs Nina, Friends and Photograph are all about her, and she also appeared in his music video for his 2012 song Drunk.

Nesbitt also dedicated her works to her former flame, with much of her 2014 debut album Peroxide being about her relationship with the Shape of You singer.

Ten years on, she shared the effect of the label on her early career on The Eras Podcast with Abbie McCarthy.

She shared that she had somewhat accepted the label for what it is, saying, ”There should be a disclaimer on songwriters really, but I think it is what it is really. I’ve definitely written songs about other people.

“It was tricky because I never wanted to be known as someone’s ex-girlfriend,” she added.

Nesbitt said that she was thankful for the relationship: “You know, and I think obviously, he gave me amazing opportunities of touring with him and everything. And I’m really like super grateful for that.

But she does admit the label of being his ex-girlfriends can be disappointing.

“I think I’ve had to fight that for so long, you know, articles about my albums and being described as someone’s ex is just so disheartening after all the work and years that I’ve put into it.”

She adds that it’s a phenomenon that ”only happens to women. I mean, you literally see it with Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift, like people who are massive. And it is frustrating.

“But I think it also just drives me to keep going and just be known as a musician,” she admitted.
