“It’s not just the end of the show, it is the end of the Late Show on CBS. I’m not being replaced, this is all just going away.”
Colbert said he had only learned of the decision the night before, and as audience members booed, he replied, “Yeah, I share your feelings.”
The unexpected news comes days after the comedian spoke out on-air against the parent company of CBS, Paramount, settling a lawsuit with US president Donald Trump over a 60 Minutes story the network aired.

“I am offended,” Colbert in his monologue on Monday’s show.
“I don’t know if anything, anything, will repair my trust in this company. But, just taking a stab at it, I’d say $16 million would help.”
In a statement, Paramount and CBS executives said the cancellation of the show “is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night”.
“It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.”

The Late Show franchise has been part of CBS’ lineup for three decades; Colbert took over as host in 2015 when David Letterman left the post.
Letterman had hosted the show for 22 years, starting in 1993.
During Thursday’s announcement, Colbert told the audience he was “grateful” for his time at the show’s helm.
“Let me tell you, it is a fantastic job. I wish someone else was getting it,” he said
“And it is a job I am looking forward to doing with this usual gang of idiots for another 10 months.”
