What is Laneway Festival?
The St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival, commonly known as Laneway, takes its name from its origins in Caledonian Lane, Melbourne, Australia.
The initial festival occurred over 20 years ago, in 2004 when an ex-Swedish meatball shop turned into a tiny speakeasy in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD.
Jerome Borazio began holding weekly shows at the bar as an excuse to drink with his friends and attract like-minded people.

When Borazio’s friend and former band booker Danny Rodgers returned from New York, he was convinced to join the bar staff.
According to the Laneway website, Rodgers said: “Six months in I thought ‘We should do music in here.”‘
“Jerome had mentioned The Avalanches wanted to play so we decided to do a Sunday series of shows.” These shows became referred to as the “Summer Series,” which quickly transformed into a festival.
In 2005, the festival was born in an ultra-impressive feat: “We forgot to put the roof on the stage,” Rodgers said.
“We didn’t have a production manager, our mates helped us out. In my mind it was a block party – we were really surprised that we pulled it all off. But we didn’t really know what the rules were, so we just kind of went with it.”
Laneway today
Since its first production, the festival has run almost every year, showcasing a wide variety of indie pop, alternative, and rock music in January and February.
The one-day festival travels throughout Australia. This year, it will kick off in Auckland on Thursday, February 6, before travelling to Brisbane on February 8.
Sydney will be next on February 9th, followed by Melbourne on February 14, Adelaide on February 15 and ending in Perth on February 16.
All shows are 16+ and licensed to serve alcohol, though attendees are not permitted to bring their own alcohol.

When Laneway’s official Instagram account posted that they would be holding the event in 2025, the post included an apple.
Charli released a song called Apple this year that reached international acclaim and took over TikTok with the viral “Apple Dance.”
“WHY IS THERE AN APPLE ON THE 25? CHARLI???,” One user commented under the post.
