Brooke Shields has revealed the reason she interrupted Meghan Markle on stage a year ago.

The Blue Lagoon actress, 60, attended a panel at South by Southwest (SXSW) about women in media and entertainment alongside the Duchess of Sussex, 43, and recalled what happened at the event in March 2024.

At one point during the live chat, which was for International Women’s Day, Shields interrupted the royal to highlight their very different experiences as young girls.

“It was just too precious,” Shields explained to podcast host India Hicks as to why she decided to chime in during Meghan’s answer, as per Daily Mail.

“And I was like, they’re not going to want to sit here for 45 minutes and listen to anybody be precious or serious,” she said of the audience.

During the episode, Shields recalled American journalist Katie Couric had asked Meghan a question about being an advocate for women from an early age in her life.

The Duchess had launched into a story of when she was 11 years old and wrote to a company about changing a commercial about women being the ones to wash dishes.

“And she said, ‘I didn’t think only women wash dishes. It wasn’t fair. So I wrote to the company. And when I was 11, I wrote my first letter and when I was 11…’ and she kept saying she was 11!” Shields recounted the Duchess’ response.

The actress recalled then telling the royal mid-discussion, “Excuse me, I’m so sorry. I’ve got to interrupt you there for one minute.”

“I was trying not to be rude, but I wanted to be funny because it was so serious.”

“I just want to give everybody here a context as to how we’re different,” she told the crowd.

The actress then highlighted how when she was the same age she was playing a prostitute, referring to her role in the 1978 film, Pretty Baby, in which she played a 12-year-old raised in a brothel.

“The place went insane. And then luckily, it was more relaxed after that,” Shields continued.
