Country music star disregards long-held Saturday Night Live tradition

Mar 30, 2025

A country music star disregarded a long tradition on his recent television appearance.

Morgan Wallen was the musical guest on the March 29 episode of Saturday Night Live, which was hosted by Oscar-winning Anora actress, Mikey Madison.

At the end of the show, the cast and special guests typically stay on the stage as the credits roll to celebrate, share hugs, and say goodbye.

But instead of hanging out until the very end, Wallen exited the stage early.

Right after Madison finished up her outro, the Cowgirls singer whispered something in her ear, gave her a quick hug and then abruptly walked off.

Wallen shared a cryptic message to his Instagram Stories later.

Posting a photo of a plane on the tarmac, the singer wrote: “Get me to God’s country”.

Following Wallen’s stray from tradition, fans took to social media to share their mixed reactions to the controversial move.

“Wow, Morgan Wallen just walking off the stage during the @nbcsnl credits? In decades of watching SNL, I don’t think I’ve ever seen that. For so many of us, that is sacred ground,” one person pointed out on X (formerly Twitter).

Another said that “leaving during the goodbyes was literally so rude.”

Someone else said the show was “phenomenal” aside from Wallen.

“Every bit to the end was funny and well done. Even his set was really cool. But he was noticeably sour, both performances were angry and weird. This was really disrespectful,” wrote one.

“This is such a random thing to be angry at,” someone replied to a video of Wallen’s exit.

At the time of writing, Wallen has not yet directly addressed the backlash.

The Last Night singer last appeared on SNL in December 2020, which marked his debut.

He had been previously booked to appear on the show two months earlier in October, however, he was uninvited after videos of him allegedly breaking COVID-19 protocols surfaced.

In an Instagram video the time, Wallen said his actions were “pretty short sighted, and they’ve obviously affected my long term goals and my dreams.”

“I respect the show’s decision, because I know that I put them in jeopardy.”
