The 2025 Oscars In Memoriam segment has been criticised by fans for leaving out actress Michelle Trachtenberg.
Trachtenberg died just one week before the 2025 Oscars aged 39.
However Gene Hackman, whose death was confirmed a day later, was included in the segment, ruling out the possibility it was too late to add Trachtenberg to the tributes.
“michelle trachtenberg not being mentioned in the In Memoriam section of the oscars is upsetting, you are and will remain so so loved and admired michelle,” wrote one fan on X (formerly Twitter).

“It’s shameful that the #Oscars didn’t include Michelle Trachtenberg in their memorial montage of all the actors/actresses who have passed within the year!!!!,” echoed another on the platform.
Trachtenberg rose to fame as a child star in the 1990s and 2000s and became best known for playing Sarah Michelle Gellar’s younger sister in Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

She made her film debut in 1996 with Harriet The Spy and also appeared in hit TV drama Gossip Girl as Georgina Sparks.
While many are up in arms about Trachtenberg’s snub at the Oscars, some have reasoned that it may have been because Trachtenberg was predominantly a TV actress.

“No Michelle Trachtenberg in the #Oscars memoriam was expected but still disappointing @TheAcademy, hopefully the #Emmys will honor her,” wrote a fan on X.
Fans have also criticised the segment for the choice of music, which leant more toward ominous vibes than somber.
“Are we summoning their spirits back to this plane? why this song for in memoriam?,” one viewer shared to X as the segment aired.

The song that played as the images and video clips of stars lost of the past year was Mozart’s Lacrimosa, with fans online dubbing it as “the worst” choice and describing the vibe as “terrifying” and “scary”.
The Academy has not responded to the online reactions to Michelle Trachtenberg’s snub or the choice of music at the time of publishing.
