Goo Goo Dolls lead singer John Rzeznik has been hospitalised with pneumonia, forcing the band to reschedule several tour dates.

Rzeznik, 58, posted a video from his hospital bed on December 3 explaining the change to the band’s upcoming shows.

“We’re heartbroken to postpone our South Africa shows. This country means so much to us, and we were so excited to create more memories with you,” the American rocker captioned the video.

“Sadly, my doctor has advised rest and recovery,” it continued.

“Thank you for your understanding—we’ll make it worth the wait when we return in March 2025!”

He explained in the video that his doctor diagnosed him with pneumonia and checked him into hospital for treatment.

“We’re working on getting back down there as fast as we can,” he said.

“I will keep you informed about that and I’m just really sorry we couldn’t do that,” he added.

The Goo Goo Dolls were scheduled to perform in South Africa from December 4 to 7. Instead they will play Cape Town on March 25, Durban on March 27 and Pretoria on March 29.

They explained tickets for these rescheduled shows will remain valid for the new dates.

The band is expected to still play their show in Florida later this month.

The Goo Goo Dolls hit the big time with smash hit Iris from the 1998 movie City of Angels starring Meg Ryan and Nicholas Cage. They followed this up with hit single Slide, eventually scoring seven top 40 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and selling 15 million records worldwide.

They have received four Grammy Awards throughout their career. More recently the band has toured with Matchbox 20 and their song Iris featured on the soundtrack to the movie Deadpool & Wolverine.

Band members John Rzeznik and Robert Takac have been close friends since their formation in the nineties.

The Goo Goo Dolls are headed to Australia for their Summer Anthem tour in 2025, supported by Aussie band Thirsty Merc.

They will play shows in Canberra, Sydney, Newcastle, Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne in February and March.

This will be their first Australian tour in 20 years.

They will also headline the Yours and Owls Festival 2025 in Wollongong alongside the likes of The Kooks and Fontaines D.C.

The festival runs from March 1-2 and also features the likes of The Veronicas, and Denzel Curry.
