When Lady Gaga‘s new song The Joker for her new film Joker: Folie à Deux, many Aussie’s ears pricked up at the familiar tune.
Yes, it is the one and the same as the theme song of Australia’s very own, Kath and Kim. Both versions are of the same song, The Joker from the 1964 musical The Roar of the Greasepaint – The Smell of the Crowd.
Gina Riley, who played Kim, sang the theme song of the great Aussie show.
As Aussies took to the internet to school the rest on the world on our television history, the cast of the show was reeling from the comparisons.

One such cast member was Peter Rowsthorn, who played Kim’s husband Brett in the show.
Th 61-year-old spoke to Today about the superstar “copying” Kath and Kim‘s intro, saying that though he was “glad she’s done it”, he believes “the Gina Riley version or the Kim version is by far the better version.
“You can’t top that, it’s a beautiful power ballad,” he said.

“But, I like Gaga’s version too. It’s a bit rockier. It’s got a bit of raunch,” he added
He was also touched by the fact that 22 years on, fans still reminisced over the show and it’s intro.
“It just made me smile,” he said of the theme song, “It’s just it was such a great thing to be in.

“This song is one of the great theme songs to choose… for any TV show, because it’s got such a hook”
He also shared that he’s happy Lady Gaga revived the song as it “rebooted” the show.
“Any reboot is a good reboot for a show in showbiz terms. So it’s, it’s the gift that keeps on giving.”
