‘We adored her’: Christina Hendricks on why Leighton Meester was a ‘fantastic’ addition to The Buccaneers

Jul 5, 2025

Leighton Meester is among the new cast members to join Season 2 of The Buccaneers.

The hit AppleTV+ show follows American women as they attempt to marry into the British aristocracy for the benefit of their families.

Meester’s character Nelle comes in as the sister of Christina Hendricks‘ character Patricia St. George, with the pair having to work through a huge family secret.

And it sounds like the pair shared a sisterly bond off-screen as well, with Hendricks gushing to 9honey Celebrity about working with the former Gossip Girl star.

”She was fantastic!” Hendricks says without a second’s hesitation.

“We adored her and she was a fan of the show, she was excited to be a part of it, and just jumped in and was excited to break down characters and sit and rehearse and talk about things and was just lovely.”

Kristine Frøseth, who plays daughter Nan St. George, couldn’t agree more with her TV mum.

“She was awesome,” Frøseth, tells 9honey Celebrity.

“She went straight into the character prep, and that’s my favourite part of the job.

“So I just sent her so many texts and asked her so many questions about everything, and she was so down to really talk through everything.”

Meester wasn’t the only new cast member this season, with Jacob Ifan joining as Hector Robinson, the love interest of Lizzy Elmsworth, who’s played by Aussie actress Aubri Ibrag.

“As soon as I got off the train in Glasgow, I was made to do sort of an ordeal of tasks in order to be accepted by the group,” Ifan jokes about being hazed by his cast mates.

“There was definitely a night early on where I was quizzed on a lot of things and given a lot of nice compliments, so I think I was accepted really early on.

“I’d watched the first season, so I was a fan of the show, and so I knew who all these guys were as actors, but not as people. So it’s always a slightly intimidating room to go into, because you kind of think, ‘I hope there’s no drama, I hope everyone gets along, everyone’s nice’ and it was the most welcoming, warm, fun cast.”

Ibrag tells her on-screen beau he “entered very smoothly” with Guy Remmers, who plays Theo, adding that he felt like Ifan had “always been there”.

The friendships among the cast on-screen do follow into their lives off-screen too, Frøseth and Hendricks say.

“It’s really special to have that community and camaraderie, and it just happened very naturally,” Frøseth tells 9honey Celebrity.

Hendricks says “it’s fun to watch” and labels the female friendships especially as ” refreshing” to see on screen.

“Not only do you feel the the camaraderie and the support that they give each other, but you guys are tender with one another and physical with one another and hold hands and touch each other, and I don’t think that’s something you see all the time, and it feels like nurturing, and it’s very, very, it’s comforting to watch,” Hendricks tells Frøseth.

“I think you guys are sweet.”

While the cast all get along and spend evenings together at the pub during the six-month shoot, Alisha Boe – who plays Conchita Closson – says it’s not a party vibe the whole time.

“I feel it’s a long shoot and I think if we showed up every day and it felt like a big party we would have burnt out,” Boe tells 9honey Celebrity.

“But it’s generally, between all of us, we do all really love each other.”

The Buccaneers season two is on AppleTV+ now, with new episodes released weekly.
