Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler star in the romance comedy 50 First Dates.

It follows Henry, played by Sandler, who falls for Barrymore’s character Lucy and takes her on multiple “first” dates after discovering she suffers from short-term memory loss.

Spoilers ahead for those who haven’t had the chance to see it! You’ve been warned.

The movie ends with Lucy waking up on a boat to a tape recorded by Henry, filling her in on where she is. She then goes outside to join Henry and their daughter, confirming the couple have ended up together.

While it’s a happy ever after for the two, the movie wasn’t supposed to end that way.

Twenty-one years after the film came out, Barrymore has admitted on a new episode of her talk show that the movie’s original ending “always sticks in my mind”.

She told her The Drew Barrymore Show co-host Ross Mathews the movie was at first called 50 First Kisses and was set in Seattle.

Barrymore said the movie was going to end with her character telling Sandler, “You should go and live your life, because this is no life here.”

“And he goes away, as he does, and he comes back and he walks into the restaurant and he just sits down and says, ‘Hi, I’m Henry.’ And the film ends.”

Naturally, fans had strong feelings about the original, much more ambiguous ending.

Many were adamant the way the movie actually ended, and being set in Hawaii rather than Seattle, was the “perfect” choice.

”After everything, we needed that happy ending,” one person wrote underneath the talk show clip posted to Barrymore’s official Instagram account.

However, others suggested the alternate ending would have been “great”.

“I love that ending it feels very raw, real, and loving. Because I always kind of wonder like… so… she kind of just got put on a boat against her will and I can’t imagine how terrifying that would be?” someone said.

Another said the original conclusion “opens up” the film for a sequel.

Someone else claimed the ending the movie went with “seems so unrealistic” and has “always been the worst part of it”.

50 First Dates was Barrymore’s second movie with Sandler after starring as romantic leads in the 1998 rom-com, The Wedding Singer.

The pair reunited for the third time on-screen in 2014 for Blended.
