Joel took to Instagram on Friday to share the news of the diagnosis with his legion of followers and fans.
Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), is a condition where excess cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the brain ventricles, which are fluid-filled chambers.
In the statement Joel explained his condition had been made worse by recent performances, leading to problems with his hearing, vision and balance.

“Under his doctor’s instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period,” read the statement.
“Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritising his health.”
The statement continued that the Uptown Girl singer was greatful for the support from fans during this time and that he’s looking forward to being able to return to the stage.
“I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding,” said Joel in the statement.
The cancellation comes after Joel fell during a concert at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut in February.
Alexa Ray Joel, the daughter Joel shares with ex-wife Christie Brinkley, shared a tribute to him on social media after the news of his diagnosis.
“We love you and we got you, Pop!” she wrote alongside a black-and-white image of a dad holding his young daughter’s hand.
