OPINION – When I was 13 years old, Lorde released her album Pure Heroine.
I listened to it over and over again – I’d go as far as to say the lyrics of that album played a major role in forming my teenage self – and I decided then and there that I would be a Lorde fan to the day I die.
So, today when the singer announced her world tour with dates across America and Europe, completely ignoring Australia and her native New Zealand, you’d think I’d be devastated.
But it’s actually the opposite – I’m ecstatic.

Fans in the comments section of Lorde’s World Tour announcement were furious the singer had skipped our corner of the world, with many taking to X (formerly Twitter) to air their frustrations:

Now, before I get in to why I completely disagree with the above social media posts, let me just preface how deep my love for Lorde runs by letting you know there is a video in the depths of the internet somewhere of 14-year-old me sat on the couch with my grandpa’s guitar, performing a cover of Royals.
I can’t sing. I can’t play guitar. And I’m also hoping no one reading this cares enough to put in the effort to dig that video up. Please.
What I’m trying to say is my young teenage self basically wanted to be Lorde, so the idea of today being able to see the woman who raised me perform what is set to be her 2025 renaissance live and in person is a dream.
By now, you’re probably confused how I can be ecstatic that the event I just referred to as “a dream” is in fact not happening – but let’s think about this logically.
Over the past few months, us Aussie concert lovers have been well and truly fed.
We’ve just had Billie Eilish, Gracie Abrams and Dua Lipa on our shores, and a new slew of concerts have now been announced.

First there was Lady Gaga (for which I forked out an obscene amount of money for a ticket) then we got the Spilt Milk lineup with Kendrick Lamar and Doechii as headliners, two of the biggest artists around right now.
Now, there’s a surprise Fisher and Chris Lake back-to-back set announced for tomorrow, May 10 – which, of course, because of my intense fear of missing out I will be attempting to secure tickets to.
Despite my bank account still recovering from my desperate need for a Laneway ticket to see Charli XCX and Clairo earlier this year, I’ve still spent hundreds to attend all these upcoming concerts (Afterpay has simultaneously saved and ruined my life) and I would have done the same if Lorde announced an Australian tour.
So, to put it simply, the reason I’m ecstatic one of my all-time favourite artists has seemingly skipped Australia in her world tour announcement is because I just can’t afford another concert right now, and I’d be willing to bet there are thousands of other Aussie Lorde fans in the exact same position.
I’d actually like to take this opportunity to personally thank Lorde for the service she has done to my bank account.
Our queen has seen the tour announcements, noted us Aussies (and, of course, our Kiwi neighbours) are sure to be short on cash, and decided to wait – she is a woman of the people, after all.

And let’s be realistic here for a minute, Lorde has been cooking.
The build up to the release of her upcoming album Virgin is like nothing we’ve seen before from the artist – in her own words, from a voice note sent to fans, “everything is about to change”.
In a recent interview with Document Journal the singer said after her last album Solar Power didn’t achieve the same commercial success as her previous works Melodrama and Pure Heroine, she made the decision to work through her own internal battles before making more music.
Now she’s “feeling the fullness of [her] power” (a very Lorde thing to say that makes me very exciting for the new album) she’s back, and set to be better than ever if her latest single What Was That is anything to go by.
Basically, this is her grand comeback. Do you really think she’s just going to completely skip her home country and closest neighbours?
This happens all the time. An artist will announce their “world tour” without actually announcing all their dates or locations, so let’s all take a big, deep breath, and relax.
Don’t go panic-buying flights to the US or Europe out of fear of not getting to see this tour live.
My prediction is that at the end of the year, Lorde is going to announce her Australian dates, wrapping the tour up in New Zealand over January and February.
Remember last year when everyone panicked that Charli XCX wasn’t going to bring Brat to Australia, only for the singer to later announce she was heading our way in January and February so we Aussies could live out our own Brat Summer after living vicariously through those in the US for the previous six months?
Well, the American Lorde fans have already dubbed the coming months their Lorde Summer, so let’s just sit back, wait, and hope she takes inspiration from her close friend and collaborator and brings us Aussies our very own Lorde Summer in 2026.
