Nick Viall and Natalie Joy have shared the devastating news of their pregnancy loss on the latest episode of the Viall Files podcast.

The couple shared with listeners that they had deliberated about whether or not to share such personal news, ultimately deciding the topic is something the majority of people have either experienced themselves or know someone else who has.

“I’m actively miscarrying our second child,” Joy shared through tears.

“It has been the biggest heartbreak, I think, of my life. I’ve never experienced something where I feel so empty inside.”

The 26-year-old said that she has been trying to ‘put on a front’ and “be a good mum” to the couple’s first child River, however has been been struggling.

“I just feel dead inside,” she said.

“And it sucks because I have to be so alive for River. I have to be silly and goofy and funny and play with her.

“Then I have this overwhelming guilt that like, when I’m with [Nick], I can’t also do that. I’m sad that the only version of me you [Nick] get right now is this broken person.”

Joy shared that “so many” of her friends have been through the same experience, adding that her sister has endured “12 miscarriages”.

She said she’s always felt a deep sadness when others have shared their experience, but she’s never truly been able to understand the feeling of loss until going through it herself.

Viall said that he’ll never be able to his wife’s experience, but losing his second child has given him a new understanding and empathy for friends and family who have also miscarried.

“For me, it’s always felt like there was a bit of a disconnect between what I was trying to empathise and the sadness I felt from the people sharing that they had this experience,” he said.

“And once you can [understand], you sometimes feel a bit of guilt for not empathising the way you feel like you should have, now it’s happened to you.

“You really feel alone because there’s always like this, you know, ‘I’m sorry for your loss’ and… but like, ‘Hey what do you want to do this weekend?’ You know, there’s definitely a disconnect.”

But that feeling of loneliness is the reason Joy decided to share her story, saying she wanted to show mothers who “have felt this same feeling” that they’re not alone.

“I’m just so tired. You know, I’m just exhausted of this like, performing, of this putting on a brave face and putting on a happy face,” she said.

“And it’s also just a really confusing state, I think, for anyone who’s gone through this you question everything.

“I look at myself and I’m like, I just had a successful, noon-complicated pregnancy and birth, I’m 26 years old… why me? Like, why did this happen to me?”
