Country singer Melba Montgomery dies at 86 after a ‘long’ battle with dementia: ‘We know she’s been waiting to hold Dad’

American country music star Melba Montgomery has died. She was 86.

The sad news was confirmed in a moving tribute post by her daughter, Melissa Solomon Barrett.

According to Melissa, her music star mother “fought a long battle with dementia” but the family are comforted by the thought she’s reunited with her late husband, Jack Solomon.

“It is with great sadness that we announce our family has lost our mother, Melba Montgomery Solomon. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister to my uncle, sister-in-law to my aunts and aunt to my cousins,” the post began.

“She fought a long battle with dementia but is now with her loving husband, Jack Solomon in Heaven. We know mom (sic) has been waiting to hold dad for over 10 years.”

She then shared a message to fans thanking them for their support over the years of their mother and her music.

“We will provide visitation and funeral arrangements as we learn more in the coming days,” she said.

“Thank you for loving our mom (sic) as much as we have. She was an incredibly talented, kind and generous woman. Melissa Solomon Barrett, Jackie Solomon Chancey, Tara Solomon Capps, and Diane Holt.”

Underneath, the family received condolences from followers.

“So sorry for your loss, such an amazing woman and artist” one wrote.

“Melba was a beautiful jewel you all shared with us all. Wrapping you all in love at a time when words fall short,” another added in part of their post.

Montgomery, who was born in Tennessee and died in Tennessee, was known for songs including No Charge, released in 1974.

Other songs include What’s In Our Heart, Did You Ever? and Blue Moon of Kentucky. 

What’s In Our Heart was released with longtime collaborator George Jones.

The late star started singing in her teens alongside her siblings and started releasing music in the 1960s. 

She married Jack Solomon in 1968.
