Critics Choice Awards announce new date after postponing ceremony as devastating wildfires rage across LA

The Critics Choice Awards have been officially postponed. 

A star-studded event, the awards show was scheduled to take place on Sunday, January 12, but will be rescheduled amid the devastating fires across Los Angeles.

In a statement shared on their social media pages, the Critics Choice Association announced a new date of January 26, revealing the location will remain the same.

The event will be held at Barker Hangar, which is just kilometres away from where the Pacific Palisades wildfire is raging.

“This unfolding tragedy has already had a profound impact on our community,” COO Joey Berlin said.

“All out thoughts and prayers are with those battling the devastating fires and with all who have been affected.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a “state of emergency” in the area on Tuesday (Wednesday AEDT) as wind gusts fanned the flames, intensifying the fire.

The Critics Choice Awards are not the only major awards show which has been impacted as a result of the developing situation.

The organisation that puts on the Oscars has extended the voting window for Academy Awards nominations and delayed next week’s planned nominations announcement.

Bill Kramer, the CEO of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, shared the postponements to the film academy members in a letter obtained by the Associated Press on Wednesday.

Nominations and the voting window have both been extended by two days. Oscar nominations will now be revealed on Sunday, January 19, with voting now closing on January 14.

Several other A-list events that have also been impacted or rescheduled. 

The SAG Awards nomination live announcement was also cut, with the list revealed in a press release instead.  

“In an abundance of caution for the safety of our presenters, guests, and staff, the live in-person 31st Annual SAG Awards nominations announcement has been cancelled due to the wildfires and adverse wind conditions in Los Angeles,” a statement from organisers said.

The annual AFI Awards luncheon has also been postponed, while the BAFTA Tea Party at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, will no longer take place.

The Ryan Gosling-produced movie Wolf Man had its Tuesday night (Wednesday AEDT) premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood cancelled.

Similarly, Tuesday night’s premiere of Unstoppable, the biopic about one-legged wrestler Anthony Robles, starring Jennifer Lopez, was called off.

Netflix pulled the pin on a Q&A screening of Oscar contender Emilia Peréz at Grandmaster Recorders “out of an abundance of caution due to the severe winds and fires currently affecting the LA area.”

Wednesday’s planned premiere of the Robbie Williams biopic Better Man was also canned on Tuesday evening “due to the dangerous conditions affecting Los Angeles.”
