The highly anticipated sequel to Wicked: Part One has officially been given a new name. Universal Pictures has announced the follow-up film will be titled Wicked: For Good. Fans can expect the continuation of Elphaba and Glinda’s story to hit cinemas on 21 November 2025.
The first instalment, Wicked: Part One, proved to be a massive success after its release on 22 November 2024. The movie has grossed $359 million domestically and a staggering $524 million worldwide. It’s now the highest-grossing Broadway-to-screen adaptation at the domestic box office, surpassing the 1978 classic Grease. Globally, it’s second only to Mamma Mia (2008), which earned $611 million.
Director Jon M. Chu is returning to helm the second part of the Wicked saga. The film features an all-star cast, including Ariana Grande as Glinda, Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, and Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero.
Wicked: For Good will continue to bring the beloved Broadway musical to life on screen. The story serves as a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, exploring the untold backstory of Glinda the Good Witch and Elphaba, the misunderstood Wicked Witch of the West.
Wicked: Part One introduced fans to Glinda and Elphaba’s complex friendship during their time at Shiz University. From an unlikely start as roommates, the two became close despite their differences. The second film will pick up where the first left off, focusing on Elphaba’s rise as a powerful force and her branding as an enemy of Oz by the Wizard and Madame Morrible.
The title, Wicked: For Good, takes inspiration from the emotional Act 2 song, For Good. The track is a tearjerker that highlights how the characters’ lives have been forever shaped by their friendship.
Director Jon M. Chu teased that the sequel will pack a significant emotional punch. Speaking to Variety, he shared:
“It becomes eight times more relevant than before when you’re talking about truth and consequences of making the right or wrong choices. It’s intense.”
Fans are already buzzing with excitement about what’s to come. With Wicked: Part One breaking records, the sequel promises to be another spectacular musical extravaganza.
