Ed Sheeran fans, rejoice! The chart-topping singer-songwriter is gearing up to release a “big pop” album in 2025, marking an exciting return to the sound that made him a global superstar.
In a recent interview with Variety, Ed revealed that the upcoming album is finished, and he’s already filmed two music videos for its rollout. He plans to shoot another two videos early next year, proving he’s ready to go all-in for this new era.
This announcement follows a relatively quiet 2024 for the pop megastar. While he released two studio albums in 2023, Autumn Variations and Subtract, this year has seen just one single drop from Ed. However, that’s all about to change in a big way.
Ed hinted that the album will be a shift back to his pop roots, something we haven’t seen from him in a while. Speaking to Variety, he explained: “It feels like I’m getting back into big pop for the first time in a long time. It’s quite exciting.” Fans of his folk-influenced Autumn Variations can rest assured that Ed is now ready to embrace the glitz and energy of full-scale pop promotion.
Despite its more stripped-back sound, Autumn Variations still managed to hit Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart, marking Ed’s seventh UK chart-topping album. That said, its singles didn’t dominate the charts like his previous pop-focused hits, making this upcoming project all the more anticipated.
Ed’s success in pop music is legendary. His 2017 album Divide and its tropical hit Shape of You remain the biggest Number 1 album and single of the streaming era. With a track record that includes 14 Number 1 singles in the UK alone, Ed is tied with Westlife and Cliff Richard, trailing only The Beatles and Elvis Presley.
In the meantime, Ed is keeping busy with the festive season. He’s currently in the running for this year’s coveted Christmas Number 1 with Under the Tree, an emotional track he wrote for Richard Curtis’s Netflix animated film, That Christmas. Reflecting on the collaboration, Ed said the song captures the bittersweet realities many face during the holidays, especially when missing loved ones.
Adding to his seasonal impact, Ed’s 2021 holiday hit Merry Christmas with Elton John has re-entered the Official Singles Chart Top 10. Could he pull off another Christmas miracle?
While we wait for more details on Ed’s next album, one thing is certain: 2025 is shaping up to be a massive year for Sheeran and his fans.
