Today is National Coming Out Day, a time to celebrate living openly and authentically.

For Black folks, this can be even more significant, given the unique pressures in our community when it comes to identity and sexuality.

Over the years, more Black celebrities have bravely stepped into the spotlight to live their truth, inspiring others.

1.Lil Nas X

Lil Nas X broke the internet when he came out during Pride Month in 2019, while his hit “Old Town Road” was still topping the charts. He tweeted to his fans, encouraging them to listen closely to the lyrics of his song “C7osure.” Since then, Lil Nas X has been unapologetically bold with his sexuality, becoming a cultural icon for young, Black LGBTQ+ individuals by showing that you don’t have to compromise who you are for success.

Niecy Nash turned heads when she revealed her marriage to singer Jessica Betts in 2020. The Emmy-winning actress hadn’t spoken publicly about her sexuality before, so the announcement came as a surprise to many. Nash’s approach to her coming out was all about love, saying she didn’t “come out” she simply found her soulmate.
